The lady who painted it has passed away, so we are not sure what kind of paint was used. It’s absolutely beautiful, but has a few chips in it & we need to know what kind of clear coat to put on it? The entire metal mailbox has been painted with a scene similar to Thomas Kinkade paintings, so the whole mailbox would need to be covered.
Thank you in advance!
Yes, it will be used outside…….sun, rain, snow, ice….!

I take it you’re using this mailbox outside…if that’s the case –
in an unconspicuous area (like the underside) test a few different clear coats. If it was painted to be used outside I’m guessing it probably has a urethayne (sp?) finish or a lacquer – stay away from acrylic clear coats as they will crack with fluctuating temperatures.
also some lacquers will yellow with age.
You might also try an epoxy coating – thicker and more durable than a spray finish but make sure you read the directions carefully.
good luck
